Dean got the feeling Max knew he was taking Joey out of the lodge. There was something in the way the alpha looked at him, a slight glare in his eyes, accusing Dean of not asking for permission before he did something potentially dangerous.

After the third time, Dean bit the bullet and asked for permission.

Max had snarled at him. “Don’t know why you bother asking to do something after you’ve already done it. Multiple times.”

Dean had grinned. “Sorry.”

He meant it, he really did, but it was hard to be overly remorseful when he was enjoying his mate so much.

Dean wasn’t sure how the humans had turned Joey into a shifter, but having his mate be a werewolf was the most fun Dean had in, well, ever.

He and Joey could really go running together. There was an actual challenge involved in catching him when he was in his wolf form.

Sometimes Joey really gave Dean a run for his money. He was fast, but he couldn’t always keep away whenever Dean put his mind to it.

Sometimes he was sure Joey allowed Dean to catch him early so they could enjoy what came after being caught.

Max shook his head at Dean. “If it wasn’t for that stupid smile on your face, you know I’d have you by the throat, right?”

“Yeah,” Dean said, still grinning.

He wasn’t trying to be an asshole, he really wasn’t. Maybe he was just the sort of guy who naturally was an asshole. Joey used to accuse him of that.

Oh well.

Max sighed. “Fine, whatever. Just make sure no humans see you, and watch out for hunters and whatever else we’ve been dealing with lately.”

“Yup,” Dean had said, taking off so he could go and spend more time with Joey.

They had months and months of catching up to do, and Dean knew he was being clingy, but Joey didn’t seem to have any complaints, so Dean had no intentions of stopping.

Snack had moved back into their room with them, and the cat had taken to Joey like a proper pet should when greeted with its master. Joey seemed absolutely smitten with his animal now that he believed Snack was the same cat.

Dean watched Joey’s progress carefully. For the most part, he seemed to be settling back into the pack. Todd and Colten had practically cried when Dean and Joey finally came down to eat breakfast with the pack.

Poor Joey had looked slightly overwhelmed, and had glanced at Dean, as though calling for help, but there was nothing Dean could do but let Joey be smothered in hugs and questions.

Todd and Colten wanted to know how Joey was doing, if he remembered them, if he could spend time with them. Colten had proudly showed off his son, telling Joey all about how he and Zane had named him after Joey.

“I know. Zane told me,” Joey said, looking at the kid with owlish eyes. He refused to hold the baby when Colten tried to get him to, however.

That one Dean couldn’t blame his mate for.
